Swiss Pastor Johann Kaspar Lavater revived and popularized the practice of physiognomy throughout the 19th century. Modern research suggests that there is some credence to claims that certain personality types and traits can be detected through facial features.

These paintings explore 'acts of concealment' ; the conflict that exists between public and private persona and the constraints set by cultural and social protocols.
